The Periodontics is the area whose purpose is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting tissue and supporting the teeth (periodontium – peri = around; odonto = tooth), comprising the gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum and alveolar bone.
Initially, there is inflammation of the gums, being defined as gingivitis. If this inflammation is not controlled, will gradually evolve, at a variable rate, depending on each individual. Can lead to a destruction of the tooth supporting bone, causing increased tooth mobility and, in extreme cases to tooth loss. In these cases, the disease is already in a more advanced, difficult to reverse, defined by periodontitis.
It is noteworthy that patients with this type of pathology, need constant monitoring in order to prevent its reappearance.
